Recordings of Single Player Games
Did you know that there is someone who can beat the whole game, in Nightmare mode, in less than 40 minutes, without dying even once? Would you like to sit back and watch a recording of people like that actually beating the game, from their point of view, on your own PC?
Doom2 can make your PC act like a Doom2 VCR of sorts, and you can play back games that other people have recorded. This ability of Doom2 to preserve and play back the games of the highest-skilled players is one of the main reasons Doom2's popularity still exists, despite Doom being almost 10 years old.
To play the recordings, you download the file that contains the data that Doom2 recorded, and put it into your doom2 directory. The recording files always end in .lmp, and for our example, lets pretend we have a file named 30NM3413.lmp. Then, to tell Doom2 to play the recording, you would type:
doom2 -playdemo 30NM3413
Heres how it looks in the DOS prompt:
If you wanted to record your own game, you would typedoom2 -record mygame
where "mygame" is a name you pick for your recording. When your game is done, Doom2 makes a file which, in this case, is named "mygame.lmp".

All 30 maps of Doom2 completed in Nightmare mode, beaten in 34 minutes 13 seconds by the greatest "movie speed" catagory Doom player to date, Norwegian player Henning Skogsto. He is playing the game in "speed" style, which means he does not kill all monsters, he is getting through the game as fast as he can. Download the recording here .
All 30 maps of Doom2 completed in Nightmare mode, by the Norwegian doom players Anders Johnsen and Henning Skogsto. This method of doom is called "cooperative" mode because two players are in the game at once, fighting against the monsters. There are more monsters in Cooperative mode than in normal Doom2. This is a "speed" catagory recording. Download the recording here .
All 30 maps of Doom2 completed in an unusual version of Nightmare mode. This is essentially a one-player run through Doom2 in which Henning Skogsto takes on the entire game in "cooperative mode", with all of it's extra monsters, essentially alone. The second player in the game with him, Dutch player Bjorn "df" Hamels, does not participate as a fully cooperative partner with Henning in most of the recording. This may be the most difficult incarnation of Doom2 Nightmare mode that exists for one player. Download the recording here .
